The mantel. The focal point of the Living Room.
I love coming up with new décor idea for my home. But the mantel is my favorite! The possibilities are endless and themes can be so much fun. I decided this year I wouldn't be buying anything new for my fall décor. I have collected enough different items that switching things around for a unique look each year isn't too difficult. Plus I love the challenge of using whatever I have on hand to change up the look.
First I lay out the ivy of orange and red leaves across the whole mantel, letting it droop a little in front of the clock. I like to keep a picture of both of our parents around somewhere. This season those frames ended up on the mantel. Then I added the two urns to balance the pictures. Next came the brass words of live, laugh and love statically place among the leaves.
Paper pumpkins are such fun to make! Stripes of orange paper places pulled into a round shape with a leaf added to the top evolved into my perfectly cute pumpkins.

Want to make several for your own décor this fall? Heres how:
#1. you will need construction paper, scissors, tape and yarn or cord.
#2. Cut out stripes from your orange construction paper. Theres different ways to do this and you end up with a nice variety in your pumpkins. I cut across the short part of the paper making my strips about 9" long and about an 1" wide. I cut several papers at once since I knew Id be making more then one pumpkin.

#3. The above picture shows the middle piece that gives the pumpkins their shape. A small piece of orange paper (I sometimes use card stock) cut to about the size of 4 1/2" by about 2". This length decides how fat or slim your pumpkin will be. Roll this paper into a tube-like shape and tape or glue into place.
#4. Next punch holes in the top of your orange stripes. The amount of strips you use determines the "fullness" of your pumpkin. I used 13 on this one but often use more. Slide yard or cording through the holes on each strip and also through the small tube.
#5. Punch holes in the bottom of the orange strips also and slide the yarn through those holes too.
#6. Cut out a leaf from green paper. And don't use any pattern! :) That's the beauty of these pumpkins. No two are alike. Each are unique and original. Make a hole at the bottom of the leaf and slide the yard through it also.
#7. Now knot the end of the yarn. I knot it quite a few times to make an extra large knot so it wont slip back through the holes. Trim the end. If you use green yarn you can curl the ends and leave it longer.
#8. Knot the yarn coming from the bottom side of the pumpkin next. Again making the knot extra large. And trim the end.
#9. Now you need to spread out your orange strips and make your pumpkin complete!
#10. Enjoy!! And make several more. I'm finding out you can never have too many pumpkins to decorate with!!
